Hello GTP! We’re going to be starting another series geared towards Beginner Guides that will hopefully help Wizards who are on the fence about taking up Gardening. It may seem like a daunting and tedious challenge, but the pay back for various snacks, gold, reagents, and Treasure Cards are well worth it.

Gardening is one of the many additional side tasks that you are able to do in Wizard101. This guide will help you understand how to garden and essentials to becoming a Verdant Gardener in no time!

Level 20 Gardening Badge

Starting your Gardening Adventure

So you want to start Gardening? Well your gardening adventures can start once you reach Level 12. When you’ve hit that level, you’ll be able to talk to Moolinda Wu (Life School) in Ravenwood who will have the quest “Green Acres” for you.

Upon accepting the quest, Moolinda Wu will direct you to Farley in Golem Court to learn more about gardening and you’ll eventually become a Level one Novice Gardener. Farley will give you some starter seeds and four free Gardening spells (Small Soil, Medium Soil, Revive, and Plow). Below are each stage of a plant’s life, which can also be indicated by hovering over the seed when planted in gardening mode.

Gardening Essentials

Red Barn Farm
125,000 Gold

Botanical Gardens
Evergreen Bundle

Everafter Village
Fantastic Fairytale Bundle

Now that you are a Gardener, you must be wondering where are you allowed to garden? Well the beauty of Gardening is that it can be done in any of your owned castles! We recommend saving up gold and purchasing the Red Barn Farm in the Crowns Shop for 125,000 Gold! If you have the budget you can either purchase the Evergreen Bundle for the Botanical Garden or the Fantastic Fairytale Bundle for the Everafter Village. All plants love both of these living conditions and it will help them grow faster

Typically, many players take up gardening either to save up for pet snacks or try their luck at jewels. The only caveat is that the bigger the reward, the higher your gardening level needs to be to plant it. When beginning gardening, it’s best to start with Key Limes! These are easily obtainable crown plants that give a boost of experience once harvested and have reached elder. With a bit of patience, this will allow you to reach Level 3 in no time! After that you’ll be able plant higher leveled plants such as Couch Potatoes, a staple in many Wizard gardens, and eventually Evil Magma Peas. Gardening is a very simple, but mundane task that should be checked one or twice a day with their needs taken care of.

Key Limes

Can be farmed mostly by:

  • Handsome Fomori in Avalon
  • Red Cap in Avalon
  • Red Thorn Knight in Avalon
  • Greyhorn Mercenary in Zafaria
Available in Crowns Shop for 750 crowns

Plants Likes & Dislikes

Each plant has their own set of Likes and Dislikes that can either enhance their growth rate or decrease the time. Dislikes are easy to understand and typically can be another plant that your current one doesn’t like to be engaged with. It’s very important that you fulfill all the necessary likes for the plants so that your harvest will be even faster.

For example, Couch Potatoes can give or take a week to reach elder without all their likes and only approximately three days if given all their likes. Additionally, Couch Potatoes like to be near King Parsley plants and funny enough you don’t need to keep the plant alive for it to function as a plant’s like. This is definitely something to take advantage of to maximize your garden and energy time.

Gardening Spells

Raising your gardening level is essential to gaining higher level gardening spells that will cut down the time you take to garden. Certain spells will have a larger range than the starter gardening spells. For example, the Touch of Magic spell will only satisfy one plant’s need for magic for a small amount of energy, as opposed to the Grand Magic spell that provides a large area of magic for a greater amount of energy. You can find more gardening spells throughout the Spiral from Farley’s brothers in the following areas: Krokotopia, Mooshu, Celestia, Zafaria, Avalon, and Khrysalis. It’s important to note that getting spells aren’t free, be prepared to spend some gold.

Energy Cost

Energy is very important for gardening because it allows you to perform certain functions to ensure that your garden is happy. You can manage your amount of energy by looking at the yellow crystal ball next to your mana. When you run out of energy, you can either regain energy by waiting for it to refill or from purchasing an Energy Elixir from the crowns shop for 250 crowns.

It’s ideal to keep an eye out for your energy gauge while gardening because you can easily spend all the energy tending to your garden and not have enough to finish the needs of other plants. There are other ways to maximize your amount of energy, which is through Energy Gear! There will be an article geared towards Energy and where you can get attainable Energy gear, stay tuned!

Benefits of Gardening

Gardening can bring many great rewards and enhance your Wizard101 gameplay! These benefits include: pet snacks, gold, reagents, and Treasure Cards. Notably, the most abundant plant that many Wizards fill their gardens with are Couch Potatoes and Evil Magma Peas.

Couch Potatoes are one of the best and easiest to farm plants in the game. You can purchase them for 1,250 crowns in the crowns shop, but we recommend just farming for them. Couch Potatoes grow in Large Plots and provide 3000 experience at Elder.

They give a sizable amount of Treasure Cards and pet snacks that can be sold for gold prior to reaching Elder. At Elder harvest, Couch Potatoes rewards you with rank 9 mega snacks and expensive treasure cards which are used to train your pets.

Couch Potatoes can be dropped by most enemies in Grizzleheim, but commonly found within higher level mobs like Death Ghultures in Mirage or Spider Monkey’s in Empyrea. They have fairly easy needs and can be grouped together for maximum gain.

Evil Magma Peas are another great plant to include into your garden because it gives the same rewards that Couch Potatoes provide and grow in a Medium Plot rather than Larger plot.  You can also purchase them for 1,250 crowns in the crowns shop, but again we recommend just farming for them. They are most commonly found in Empyrea by farming either Kalamar Raiders or the Secret Tunnels.

Tips & Tricks

Before you begin your adventure of gardening, remember to keep these Tips and Tricks provided by the Gamma’s Scribes that we’ve learned along the way!

1. Always unequip the Red Barn House/ Botanical Gardens / Everafter Village from your Return Home button so you don’t accidentally teleport home and have to tend to the plants needs with no energy

2. Pests are a big no no when it comes to gardening! Make sure to remove them and complete all the plants needs before logging out and leaving the house

3. Your plants will grow even when you are offline, but remember to check in on them during the stages of: Baby to Adult and Adult to Mature. They won’t transform if you don’t visit them

4. If you accidentally forget to tend to a plant’s needs and leave for a long time, then the plant will reach wilting stage. Plants in wilting stage can be revived but will start the process back to the baby stage.

5.Group your plants together, don’t diversify with different plants because you never know if it will be one of the Dislikes. Check out tutorials on Youtube about making single layered plots to maximize your gardens!

Good luck and Happy Gardening from the Scribes! Thank you for the suggestion and we hope to provide more quality content to the members of Gamma’s Trading Post!
